Jack Davies joined us aged 17. Now 34, he's spent half his life working for us. Read about how he's progressed in his career and why he's stuck around for so long...
How did you get to where you are today?
I started labouring for SB Homes at 17. I’m now 34 and still with the business – I’ve been here half my life!
My dad, Roger, worked for the business for 25+ years until his retirement last year and he told me “Stick with SB Homes and you’ll do well”. I guess I listened to him!
At 19, I started working with Ian Hinchliffe on groundworks. I’ve learned a lot from Ian and am grateful for his guidance.
The groundworks job is tough. Every day, come rain or shine, you’re outside digging drains, fitting footings, and landscaping, but I can honestly say I love it.
More recently, I’ve been appointed site manager. It’s my job to organise everyone and make sure the site runs smoothly. I liaise between the office and site; it’s a juggling job – I sometimes get 100+ phone calls in a day.
I’m still doing groundworks too, and I’ll even meet with customers.
What’s the best part of your job?
My favourite part of the day is opening the site at 7am in the morning. It’s a great time of day before everyone gets there; I work out what needs doing to make progress that day.
I enjoy being organised and working hard. But the very best bit of my job is driving machinery – there’s nothing I don’t know about machines!
What do you hope for SB Homes’ future?
I hope to be a part of the business for a long time to come, continuing to build our reputation.
I always like the start of a new site as we break ground, so I’m looking forward to getting stuck into our Lingards development in Slaithwaite.
Why have you been part of SB Homes for such a long time?
I have a huge amount of respect and loyalty for Steve. It doesn’t feel like he’s my boss, he’s more of a friend.
Also, our new build quality is very high. It makes my job enjoyable because the end product is such good quality – I feel proud to come to work everyday.
