Last week’s open day at the former Swan pub in Marsden was a roaring success.
We invited former pub-goers, landlords and local people to visit the establishment for one last time, to take away any items that incited memories of a pub they once loved.
Over 100 people turned up to dig through the hundreds of items, while plenty of bar equipment was donated to establishments throughout the Colne Valley.
Hand-pumps were given to the Colne Valley Beer Festival – an annual event organised by Colne Valley Scouts – and Netherton Con Club, while the fridges went to good homes; Marsden Bowling Club and Marsden Football Club. Marsden Mechanics also benefitted from the soft drink dispenser, while Marsden Socialist Club acquired the darts scorer.
We were also thrilled to reunite former residents with special, meaningful items. Pamela Burgess, whose father John Gough, ran the pub for 23 years, picked up the oval copper mirror, which stood proudly above the bar for decades.
Pamela’s sister, Gloria, who was born at The Swan, also visited the pub for one last tour of her former home.
As a business with roots in the local community, we were delighted to be able to host such a special day. It’s days like those which keep life interesting!
In fact, one gentleman, Philip Moorhouse, brought in his own home-brewed beer and a pipe, for one last drink at the bar.
In the process, we raised a small sum of £75 for Holme Valley Mountain Rescue, whose base is adjacent to Station House. After being broken into recently, with £1,000-worth of equipment being stolen, we want to support the cause as it gets back on its feet.
